This month’s issue of Billboard Magazine has a particularly special note within the pages, sponsored and penned by John Mayer. The Dead & Company guitarist has been expressing gratitude to the music and culture of the Grateful Dead since he first started the gig in 2015, even calling it the best thing to ever happen to his career. Somewhat of a late-bloomer in this definitive style and genre of music, Mayer continuously finds new ways to let the fans know how grateful he is for these life-changing times. In a full page spread in Billboard, he writes quite simply,“To the band that changed my life, and for the music that keeps on coloring it in:Congratulations on the 50th anniversary of your debut album.Forever Grateful, John Mayer”In March of 1967, the Grateful Dead released their debut album The Grateful Dead. The record included few originals, “The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion)” and Jerry Garcia‘s “Cream Puff War,” along with some of their signature covers of “Beat It On Down The Line,” “Cold Rain and Snow,” “Sitting On Top of the World,” “Morning Dew,” “Viola Lee Blues,” and more. It’s no wonder John Mayer felt the need to attribute these career-shaping sounds, as he continues to carry the torch 50 years later while performing alongside original members guitarist Bob Weir and drummer Bill Kreutzman, and long-time percussionist Mickey Hart. The revitalized music is only accentuated through the bass wonders of Oteil Burbridge and the psychedelic keys of Jeff Chimenti. The six will hit the road again this summer. Check out the full schedule here!John Mayer will also be on solo tour this summer, promising an acoustic set, a set with the John Mayer Trio (featuring bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Steve Jordan), and a set with his full live band as well. Iran on Sunday reported its highest single-day novel coronavirus infection count in nearly a month, warning that most of its provinces have been hit by a resurgence of the disease. The Islamic republic has been battling the Middle East’s deadliest outbreak of COVID-19 since late February. After a lull in deaths and infections from April to May, it now appears that the provinces first hit, including the holy city of Qom, are back in the same place as figures have been on the rise. “Sadly, since late June, daily infections have been on a rising trajectory” in Qom in central Iran, she said.”We are concerned that trivializing the situation and lax observance of health protocols may lead to a worsening of the outbreak in the province.”Lari warned against travel to Mazandaran, a popular northern tourist resort at the vanguard of the outbreak where daily infections had more than quadrupled in the past six weeks.Official figures show a marked increase in deaths and infections since the end of June.As a result, mask-wearing was made compulsory in covered areas and provinces were given powers to reimpose restrictive measures.Iranian media said that renowned Iranian filmmaker Khosro Sinai, 79, had died from the virus on Saturday.Celebrated and awarded in numerous Iranian and international festivals, Sinai was the latest high-profile figure to succumb to COVID-19 in Iran following several government officials and politicians.Topics : Health ministry spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari said that 2,685 more people had tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, the country’s highest single-day count since July 8.This raises total cases identified since late February to 309,437, she added.Another 208 people also died during the same period, bringing the overall toll to 17,190.According to Lari, the situation is “concerning” in 25 out of Iran’s 31 provinces.
Stuff.co.nz 5 January 2014The number of women having abortions in New Zealand has dropped to its lowest rate in almost 20 years and significantly fewer teenagers are having the procedure.Wider use of contraception, better school-based education and even reality television are all thought to be behind the drop.In 2012, 14,745 women had abortions in NZ, down from 18,382 five years earlier. The number of abortions is at the lowest level since 1995, according to a report from the Abortion Supervisory Committee, which works to improve the quality of abortion services in New Zealand.Women in their 20s were most likely to have an abortion, followed by 15- to 19-year-olds. FORMER National Sports Council Chairman, Joseph ‘Reds’ Perreira last Monday evening spoke extensively on the history of several sport disciplines in Guyana, and offered valuable adviceJoseph ‘Reds’ Perreiraon the way forward when he addressed a gathering of sports enthusiasts during a forum at Moray House. Those in the audience included Director of Sport Christopher Jones, who commended the thoughts and dialogue that the event produced.“I think he was very incisive,” Jones commented. “He provided us with a bit of nostalgia, speaking a little about what was obtained under his tenure. He challenged associations to improve on their structure, recognising that one of the things that are lacking now among the various associations and federations is the club structure. For the federations to grow stronger they must have a solid club structure which is lacking.”Perreira, during his address, focused on sports in Guyana during pre-Independence era and how things have changed to what it is today. He also presented ideas on how Guyana can better perform and make an impact on the regional, Pan-American and World stages. The well-known former cricket commentator pointed to Bartica as a location where more sports should be heading as the area continues to grow and develop.“If I were a president of a national association I would be heading to Bartica to see how my sport would thrive in Bartica.”He also spoke of the need for the associations to utilise the resources of the National Community Development Councils.During a brief question-and-answer segment at the end of the event, Perreira begged the question as to why Guyana has the only stadium without the stands being named – which was met with resounding applause from the 30 plus in attendance.
(CMC) – Assistant coach Roddy Estwick has urged batting star Shai Hope to rediscover his best red-ball form, if West Indies are to put pressure on England’s bowlers in next month’s three-Test series. While Hope has set the world ablaze with his imperious form in the one-day format where he averages 52, he has noticeably struggled in the Test arena with an average of 27 belying his obvious quality. The 26-year-old masterminded the now famous win at Leeds three years ago when he scored a hundred in both innings of the second Test but has not passed three figures since and has averaged a paltry 19.In contrast during the same period, he has blasted eight hundreds and 13 fifties in One-Day Internationals, at an average of 57.“He’s been outstanding in the white-ball format. We now need to get him to transfer that form he’s carrying into red ball cricket,” Estwick told reporters.“He hasn’t made a century in Test cricket since the back-to-back centuries at Headingley so we need Shai now.”Hope arrived in England in 2017 with a miserly average of 17 from seven Tests and failed again in both innings of the first Test at Birmingham in a crushing innings and 209-run defeat inside three days. However, he produced two high-quality innings at Headingley to etch his name into history, becoming the first-ever player to score a hundred in both innings at the venue in 127 years of first class cricket. His first-innings 147 helped rescue West Indies from 35 for three early on the second day and propelled them to 427 all out while his second innings, an unbeaten 118, saw the Caribbean side overhaul a target of 322 on the final day.In 33 innings since that tour, the elegant right-hander has notched just three half-centuries with a best of 90 not out against minnows Zimbabwe in late 2017.Now an entrenched member of the West Indies setup, Estwick said it was important for Hope to assume responsibility on the current tour and produce “world class performances”.“He’s a lot more experienced, we need him to be ready. We need the batting to really click in England because if the batting clicks, it gives us a real chance with the bowling we’ve got,” stressed Estwick.“And once we can put scores on the board we can become a lot more competitive; so Shai is very, very important to us. He knows that, he’s now one of the senior members of the group so he’s really got to stick his hand up and give us some real world-class performances.”Speaking to media via Zoom from quarantine on Tuesday, Hope conceded it was a critical time to improve his form in the longest format but remained at a loss to explain why he had not excelled recently.“Obviously we want to change that (from) around. Red ball is actually my favourite part of the game but the runs and the stats aren’t exactly where I want them to be but I’m working towards that,” he pointed out.“Honestly, I can’t pinpoint anything at this stage (to explain my form in Tests). I wouldn’t say my preparation has changed, I don’t think it’s anything major when it comes to my technical side of the game.“Obviously there are certain things you can tweak as you go along, but having said that it’s probably more of a mental thing. Hopefully I can turn that around especially in this series and move on from there.”
Update: Square has reversed course on this and apologized. The game will be updated shortly and will be fully playable on jailbroken devices!Every so often you get a game developer or publisher trying to be clever by building anti-piracy measures directly into the gameplay of their titles. Sometimes it’s funny, like in the case of Game Dev Tycoon. But what Eidos has done to the new Deus Ex is down right stupid.Deus Ex: The Fall was released for iOS a couple of days ago and costs $6.99. It counts as a whole new story in the Deus Ex universe and is actually classed as a sequel to the Deus Ex: Icarus Effect novel, only in game form. The gameplay remains true to the previous games, where you have multiple choices and augmentations to be as stealthy as you like, or you can just go in guns blazing. And it’s the use of guns in the game that could render your $6.99 purchase completely useless. That’s because Eidos decided to break the game if you run it on a jailbroken device. Deus Ex: The Fall checks to see if your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch is jailbroken, and if it is, the ability to shoot is removed. What players will see is the message above. It appears during the game’s tutorial, and apparently blocks progress because you have to tranquilize some guards at that point. This is ridiculous because Eidos has basically decided that everyone running the game on a jailbroken device must be a pirate. That is definitely not the case, and there will be many gamers who legitimately paid for the title who now can’t play it.By adding this limitation Eidos isn’t helping to stamp out piracy, it’s blocking gamers from playing and therefore not buying the game. It’s also doing nothing to help the publisher’s image within the gaming community.Hopefully Eidos’ response to this will be to patch the game and remove the firing limitation. And they need to do that quickly otherwise they can say goodbye to a good chunk of the sales this title would have otherwise enjoyed.
