MCU News Gurira Joins Infinity War RRated Movies and Wonder Fillion

first_imgStay on target It’s only been a few days since the Black Panther trailer left everyone’s jaws on the floor. Chances are you’re already making plans to see it, but today’s news might provide a little extra motivation. In addition to Chadwick Boseman as T’challa, Deadline reports that Danai Gurira will appear in Avengers: Infinity War. Best known for playing Michonne in The Walking Dead, Gurira joins the Marvel Cinematic universe as Okoye in Black Panther. Okoye is one of the mighty warrior women that watch over the royal family of Wakanda.Gurira instantly became a fan-favorite on The Walking Dead, as the badass samurai-sword wielding post-apocalyptic warrior Michonne. Her performance injected life and excitement back into the series when it sorely needed it. After seeing her work on TV, it’s not hard to imagine her stealing the show in the upcoming superhero flick. Not much else is known about her role in either movie at this point, but she must be pretty important to Black Panther if she sticks around for Infinity War as well.Although, if trailer numbers are anything to go by, people are already plenty hyped for Black Panther. It hasn’t even been a week since the trailer dropped, but it’s already made a huge splash. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s already among the top three most-watched trailers Marvel has put out. In the 24 hours after the trailer appeared, it racked up an impressive 89 Million views. That still puts it under Thor: Ragnarok’s 136 Million, but it’s a promising sign for Marvel that people are excited to see Black Panther’s first standalone flick. To put that into perspective, that’s more views than either Star Wars: The Force Awakens or Star Wars: Rogue One was able to rack up. The trailer also started a ton of discussion on Twitter, with more mentions than the NBA game it accompanied. The only downside is we still have to wait until February to see it.In other Marvel news, Kevin Feige recently weighed in on the possibility of R-Rated MCU movies. With the success of Deadpool and Logan, fans have been asking Feige whether Marvel Studios proper would ever produce a movie like that. Speaking on Facebook with AlloCine, He gave a definite “maybe.”“I don’t think it’s out of the question. When I started at Marvel seventeen years ago, the Blade franchise was doing very well. A lot of people didn’t even know that it was based on a Marvel character because at the time they sort of hid the fact it was Marvel. So, not out of the question, but not something we’re working on right now”, he said.So nothing planned at this point, but it’s encouraging to know he wouldn’t rule out the idea if the right script came along. His referencing Blade is also interesting. Those first two movies were a lot of fun. Wouldn’t it be cool to see Blade come back in the MCU? Maybe after we see what Phase Four looks like, we’ll have a better idea of how likely that is. Feige also mentioned Sony’s upcoming R-rated Venom movie. Though Venom is a Marvel character, Feige confirmed that the movie will not be part of the MCU. (Even though Spider-Man is. Rights are weird.)Nathan Fillion speaking at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con International (Photo by Gage Skidmore, via Wikimedia Commons)Finally, ever since a deleted Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 scene put Nathan Fillion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we’ve been wondering if he’d ever make his proper MCU debut. The cut scene in question featured a bunch of movie posters featuring Fillion as the actor Simon Williams. Especially dedicated Marvel Comics readers will recognize that name as the alias of Wonder Man.James Gunn has said in the past that he hoped to put Fillion as Wonder Man in a movie at some point in the future. Now, Fillion himself has weighed in. According to Comic Book Resources, Fillion spoke about the potential part in an interview on The Ara Show on Vancouver Canada’s KISS FM. After filling in the audience on what was in the deleted scene, who Simon Williams is, and mentioning he eventually becomes an Avenger, Fillion called the scene “a neat little Easter egg.”“It was a neat little piece of the universe. It didn’t get into the movie. That’s fine. That happens all the time. I still had the same wonderful experience. But moving forward, I don’t know, let me see what we can do with this opportunity. That’s just a cleverly disguised opportunity. Am I right?”That matches up with what Gunn has said in the past. It’s an opportunity for Fillion to join the MCU, but that’s all it is right now. Nothing has been set in stone, but if Gunn is able to get Wonder Man into a movie, Fillion would be up for the job. Here’s hoping that happens. Nathan Fillion is an incredibly fun actor, always bringing just the right amount of smarm to his often egotistical characters. He’d be a great addition to the Marvel universe if Gunn can get him in there.
