The Victorian Women’s 27s team has created history by securing Victoria its first ever National Touch League championship. The dynamic outfit overcame a gutsy Hunter Hornets side 6-4 in the final to etch their place in the record books. This is the first time that the Women’s 27s category has been included as part of the NTL. The Victorians were rank outsiders coming into the new division but gained confidence and momentum with strong wins over Sydney Rebels and Sydney Scorpions on the opening day of play. Captain Suzy Barrett said the harmony amongst her teammates was a contributing factor to the triumph. “We’re really stoked, the girls have worked very, very hard and it’s a good reward,” Barrett said. “We did a lot of fitness and we did a lot of basic teamwork and it paid off. We didn’t have any moves, we just went with intensity and teamwork and that was our motto the whole time.”Barrett made note of the difficult challenge her team had to meet to claim the title. “The Hornets are an awesome team,” she said. “They were the best team that we played all tournament. They moved us around hard, our middles were stuffed, and they were a nice bunch of girls too.”Rangy speedster Jennifer Galea was the standout for Victoria in the final, scoring four of her teams six touchdowns. Galea credited the win to “Ticker, dedication, fitness and fantastic teamwork”. Galea also had plenty of praised captain Suzy Barrett, coach Shauna Hammond and assistant coach Michael Carter for their leadership and dedication to the squad. “I could single out every single person in our team for something different,” she said. “I could name 101 things that each of them do spectacularly.” Touch Football Victoria State Operations Manager Nick Mooney said the Vic women’s victory was the culmination of a lot of work from Victorian Touch. “The players have done brilliantly as have the coaching staff,” Mooney said. “And a special mention goes out to Michael Lovett. Whilst he wasn’t directly involved in the team this year he has done a lot of work with that squad over the years so it’s a great day for Touch Football in Victoria and a great effort from the ladies.” Touch Football Victoria will now look to use their first success at national level as leverage to boost the game from grassroots level all the way through to Victoria’s newly created elite competition, the VT League. “I think it will give some people the impetus to play so numbers will increase,” Mooney said. “Also I think it will give the up-and-coming 19, 20 and 21-year-olds a bit belief that they can come to an NTL and win a championship.”In years to come teams from around the country will know to keep an eye on the Victorians. Galea said her team was confident of defending their championship.“We hope to come back next year and take it out again next year.” For further news and results see the NTL website

Feyenoord striker Robin Van Persie, has announced that he is set to retire from football by the end of the current season with the Dutch club.Dutch striker Robin Van Persie has lived a very fruitful career as a professional, he is set to retire in the same club where he began this adventure as he just announced on Wednesday.Ahead of next Sunday’s Klassieker between Feyenoord and Ajax, Robin Van Persie just confirmed that the time for him to hang up the boots should be when he is still having fun while playing football and this season is ideal for that decision.Robin had one of the most successful careers of any Dutch footballer in modern history, he lived an especially significant career for both Arsenal and Manchester United, clubs where he became a world-class player. After leaving his club in Holland looking for success in England, Van Persie arrived in Arsenal with the hope of winning many trophies under Arsene Wenger but he only won the FA Cup and the Community Shield. The Dutchman didn’t win a major trophy until Sir Alex Ferguson brought him to Manchester United, where he won the 2012-2013 Premier League with the Red Devils.Robin also returned to his hometown club where he won the Cup, something that made him feel like his career was finally complete and ultimately decided on retiring this season.“When should I stop? That is normally at the end of this season. From the age of five, I’ve only been involved in football. I also do not believe that my return to Feyenoord has only been successful if we win the title.”“How is it successful? This is actually it, if you look at the whole picture. I had lost the fun. That’s not how I wanted to end, without pleasure. The fun has returned at Feyenoord.”“I want to win as a football player and the cup win was nice, but that is not the measurement between whether [the return to Feyenoord] is successful or not.”“I wanted to give something back, share my experiences. I am trying to help my fellow players.”“I see it as broader than just winning a title or not. That is the goal – that is what the club also say – but whether or not we win a title is not decisive for me on whether my return is successful or not,” he concluded.Important win yesterday, we keep going!
