Wolf Administration Announces Workers’ Comp Insurance Rate Cut, Further Lowering Cost of Doing Business in Pennsylvania

first_img Press Release Boyertown, PA –Wolf Administration cabinet secretaries for the Insurance Department and Labor & Industry today announced Pennsylvania businesses will see another cut in workers’ compensation insurance rates while maintaining benefit levels for injured workers.Insurance Commissioner Teresa Miller and Labor & Industry Secretary Kathy Manderino made the announcement at an event at Global Advanced Metals in Boyertown.Workers’ comp insurance rates will drop 6.21 percent, effective April 1, reducing a key expense for many companies and saving Pennsylvania businesses an estimated $150 million this year.“This significant rate cut comes on top of reductions during my administration’s first two years, which improved our state’s standing across the nation for this cost of doing business,” said Governor Wolf. “Today’s reduction will further help business owners create jobs that pay in Pennsylvania and at the same time, maintain fair benefits for workers injured on the job, something that is vital for families’ financial well-being and peace of mind.”Today’s rate cut announcement comes following a national study released last November, showing Pennsylvania improved its standing among states in workers’ comp insurance costs under the Wolf Administration, dropping from 17th highest to 26th highest from 2014 to 2016.  The Oregon Department of Consumer and Business Services conducted the study comparing workers’ comp insurance rates for 50 selected employment classes based on methods that put states’ workers’ comp rates on a comparable basis with a constant set of state-specific risk classifications.Commissioner Miller said her department under Governor Wolf’s leadership is working to maintain a vibrant and competitive workers’ compensation insurance market, helping keep costs down.“More than 325 companies offer workers’ compensation insurance coverage in Pennsylvania,” Commissioner Miller said.  “This means employers are able to find attractive, cost-efficient options for this vital insurance.”The rate reduction follows the Insurance Department’s approval of the Pennsylvania Compensation Rating Bureau’s annual loss cost filing. These loss costs are used to determine the premiums businesses pay for workers’ compensation insurance. The premium savings for an individual employer will vary based on the employer’s risk classification, claims experience and other factors. Not all employers will see a decrease. This is the sixth consecutive workers’ compensation insurance cut in as many years, and brings the cumulative savings to $720 million for the past six years. Workers’ compensation insurance covers the cost of medical care and rehabilitation for injured workers, and lost wages and death benefits for the dependents of those killed in work-related accidents. The other important component of today’s announcement is that benefit levels have been maintained for injured workers.  Labor & Industry Secretary Manderino said certified workplace safety committees, overseen by her department, are key for both cost and safety.“Certified workplace safety committees help employers and workers keep safety top-of-mind at all times,” Secretary Manderino said.  “And those companies with a committee receive a five percent discount on their workers’ comp insurance premiums.”More than 11,220 state-certified workplace safety committees have been established since March 1994, protecting more than 1,463,000 workers. Additionally, employers with certified workplace safety committees have saved close to $604.2 million in workers’ compensation premiums. These savings in insurance costs are due solely to the five percent premium discount provided to businesses that have these committees.Global Advanced Metals has a long-standing certified workplace safety committee and won a Governor’s Award for Safety Excellence in 2016. Global is a leading manufacturer of high performance tantalum metallurgical and powder products to the electronics, aerospace, automotive, and chemical manufacturing industries.“Global Advanced Metals, Inc. is proud of our safety record, which is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our workforce to our safety process.  This dedication to safety has been instrumental in our successful certification as an OSHA VPP Star site since 2008, as well as receiving the Governor’s Award for Safety Excellence,” said Mark Lackey, Boyertown Facility General Manager.  “We could not have achieved this level without the safety focus and effort from all of our employees and contractors.  It is great to see that our efforts and the efforts of many companies in Pennsylvania have contributed to real cost reductions for current and future businesses in PA.”Secretary Manderino added her department’s Bureau of Workers’ Compensation Health & Safety Division provides employers with the most up-to-date and relevant safety information and benefits possible for employees.  Employers should contact their insurance company or agent for more information about how their workers’ compensation premiums will be affected.More information on Pennsylvania insurance products is available at www.insurance.pa.gov.For more information on making Pennsylvania’s workplaces safer, visit www.dli.pa.gov, “Workers’ Compensation Services.” March 30, 2017 SHARE Email Facebook Twittercenter_img Wolf Administration Announces Workers’ Comp Insurance Rate Cut, Further Lowering Cost of Doing Business in Pennsylvanialast_img read more

Lancashire win the County Championship again – on points

first_img Lancashire have the English County Championship back in their grasp after a dramatic final day at Minchinhampton when they not only needed to win their match but to accumulate as many points in doing so.They did just that, overcoming Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Channel Islands 6½ – 2½ while Devon beat Leicestershire and Rutland 5½ – 3½ to finish second place. In the end both counties had two match wins so the verdict went to game points with Lancashire gaining 15½ to Devon’s 14.It is Lancashire’s 11th County Championship overall and their third in the past six years and their captain Paul Williams, in his first year as captain, was naturally delighted with his side’s success.“It has been a fantastic experience being involved with a team that’s friendly and full of spirit,” he said. “We knew what we had to do and after a tie in the foursomes so I loaded by experienced players at the back in the singles and all produced.“I wanted Haydn McCullen to show he was No.1 and he has made it a hat-trick. He won the Lancashire county and boys championships and now the English County title.“Also, Sean Towndrow holed a six foot clutch putt on the final green this morning to earn us a half. Without that we could have lost momentum so I’m really pleased for him.“But it’s been a good year for me. We‘ve won the Northern League and now this but everyone has pulled together.”After being held 1½ – 1½ in the morning foursomes, the North Region champions knew they needed as many game points as they could get from the six singles. There was little to separate the players in any of the games in the early stages but as the afternoon wore on so Lancashire gradually assumed control.Haydn McCullen gave them a great start with a 3 and 2 win over Hampshire’s Harry Ellis, who found himself 5-down after 12 holes but strung together three successive birdies to reduce the damage.Mark Young found himself behind early on to Ryan Henley but battled back to lead 2-up at the turn before taking advantage of the Hampshire man’s errors to win 5 and 3.Paul Howard and John Carroll both came through 3 and 2 over Elliot Groves and Gavin O’Neill respectively which meant that Sean Towndrow’s 4 and 2 defeat by Tom Robson hurt little.Devon made a great bid for the title. After taking the foursomes 2-1 against Leicestershire, they took command of the top singles and soon had three points on the board which assured them of victory in the match. But they needed also every point they could get. After leading early, Jimmy Mullen went 1-down to Colin Mitchell at the turn. But he pressed the accelerator on the back nine, regaining the lead with a birdie at the 12th then winning the 14th and 15th on his way to a 3 and 2 victory.Sam Edwards had two front nine birdies to Jonathan Herbert’s three but the Leicestershire man added a couple of bogeys to be out in level par to Edwards’ two under 33 for a 1-up lead.  Herbert fell 2-down with a double-bogey at ten while Edwards went further in front with a birdie at 13 before closing out a 2 and 1 success.David Blick also went out in 33 to be 3-up against Leicester’s Ashley Mason on his way to a 5 and 3 win, which ended when Mason lost his ball on the 15th and conceded. But they could only reap a half from the bottom three games, thanks to Dan Rosevear against Martin Anderson. The two bottom games went Leicestershire’s way through their long-serving campaigners, Steve Sansome, who won 4 and 3 against Dave Ashley, and David Gibson by 5 and 3 over Adam Bridgewater.Photo copyright Leaderboard Photography. 29 Sep 2013 Lancashire win the County Championship again – on points last_img read more

Cowboys release Michael Sam from practice squad

first_imgDallas Cowboys practice squad player defensive end Michael Sam speaks to reporters after team practice at the team’s headquarters in Irving, Texas. (AP Photo/LM Otero, File)IRVING, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys released defensive end Michael Sam from the practice squad Tuesday, another setback as the NFL’s first openly gay player tries to make an active roster during the regular season for the first time.Sam spent seven weeks with the Cowboys after signing to their practice squad on Sept. 3, four days after he was among the final cuts by the St. Louis Rams at the end of the preseason. The Rams drafted the former SEC defensive player of the year from Missouri late in the seventh round in May. He was pick No. 249 out of 256. Sam had three sacks in the preseason with St. Louis playing mostly against second- and third-stringers.The Cowboys are among the league’s worst in sacks but have been getting solid production with a rotation in the front four of a defense exceeding expectations.Dallas also has rookie second-round pick DeMarcus Lawrence close to coming back after breaking his right foot in training camp. He was placed on short-term injured reserve and will be eligible to play next week against Arizona.Veteran defensive end Anthony Spencer has been getting stronger each week in his return from microfracture knee surgery that sidelined him all but one game last season. The Cowboys (6-1), off to their best start since they were 12-1 in 2007, are playing their second straight NFC East opponent at home, with Washington (2-5) visiting Monday night. While releasing Sam, the Cowboys added linebacker Troy Davis of Central Florida and defensive tackle Ken Bishop of Northern Illinois to their practice squad.___Online:AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFLlast_img read more
