India bounced back to win the second ODI by six wickets in Pune to level the three-match series 1-1, thanks to some thorough professional performances from Bhuvneshwar Kumar with the ball and later, Shikhar Dhawan and Dinesh Karthik with bat.India captain, Virat Kohli was all praise for the bowlers, namely Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Burmah, for their splendid opening spell. The pair cleaned up the New Zealand top-order, sharing five wickets between them.”Pretty good game for us today, exactly what we spoke at toss time. We thought the wicket will play slower during the day, and better during the evening. That’s how it was,” Kohli said at the post match presentation.”Bowlers were really clinical today and fielders as well. Both those guys are coming along nicely (Bhuvi and Bumrah),” said Kohli added. Before the start of the match, in a major expose, India Today TV caught Pune pitch curator Padnurang Salgaonkar on camera, promising a 340-run surface at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium. Two of India Today’s undercover reporters, posing as bookies, caught Salgaonkar on tape. The curator assured the reporters that the pitch would yield 337 runs and the target would be easily chaseable. He also said he could tamper the pitch to suit the needs of a particular team. Soon after the sting operation aired on India Today and Aaj Tak on Wednesday morning, BCCI and MCA swung into action.”They know they’re going to start more often than not. Today, with the wicket being slow, it was heartening to see them getting wickets in conventional ways,” Kohli said. (India Today’s Operation CricketGate: Ball in ICC’s court after Pune pitch controversy)advertisementBhuvneshwar and Bumrah chipped away with regular wickets while the spinners including part-timer Kedhar Jadhav never allowed the Kiwis to build any kind of momentum, as New Zealand managed only 230/9 in their alotted 50 overs.Kohli also praised his batsmen as they stuck to their task and saw out the small total with relative ease.”Dhawan has been playing really well. He’s pretty confident at the moment. Dinesh as well, getting some crucial runs for himself as well as the team.”He now wants to shift his focus to the ODI series decider in Kanpur, saying, “I look forward to challenges. We spoke about bouncing back, and we have bounced back here today. Would look to play a similar sort of game in Kanpur as well.”

England did their best to shrug off the omission of Ben Stokes from the Ashes tour squad but the world class all-rounder’s absence was felt keenly by the tourists in their crushing 10-wicket defeat by Australia at the Gabba.Stokes has been suspended since he was arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm outside a Bristol nightclub in September and police continue to investigate the incident.News that Stokes had flown to New Zealand, his country of birth, fanned speculation he could be set for a recall, despite England’s cricket board saying the trip was “private” and not Ashes-related.Australian media, however, suspect it could be part of a plan to parachute him into the team for the third Test in Perth if the result of the police investigation comes out beforehand. For all the headlines and attention a Stokes recall might generate, England would likely welcome him back with open arms, particularly after their struggles with bat and ball in the series-opener in Brisbane. For two days at the Gabba, however, Stokes’s absence seemed as if it would be nothing more than a footnote to the grander story of the first Test.England’s rookie batsmen Mark Stoneman, James Vince and Dawid Malan, repelled Australia’s much vaunted pace attack to post half-centuries and drive their team to a first innings 302.It was a total, paceman Stuart Broad noted, England would have taken “any day of the week” at the Gabba, where no English side has come out on top since Mike Gatting’s team in 1986.advertisementSTOKES-LIKE RESISTANCESuccess with the bat carried through to the ball as the tourists’ bowlers reduced Australia to 76 for four on day two, but from there it became clear that veterans Broad and James Anderson could use a little help.Australia skipper Steve Smith did what he does best and rescued the side with an unbeaten 141, making light of England’s attempts to contain him by bowling a stubborn off-stump line and setting defensive field placements.A game-breaking wicket was needed but neither all-rounder Chris Woakes or back-up seamer Jake Ball looked capable of delivering it.The new batsmen who were feted for their first innings defiance quickly wilted in the second as the Gabba pitch quickened and a middle order desperate for a measure of Stokes-like resistance crumbled as England were skittled for 195.Anderson and Broad were promptly pressed back into service, no doubt too soon for their liking. While boasting nearly 900 Test wickets between them, neither of the veteran pacemen could break David Warner and Cameron Bancroft’s opening partnership and the Australians ended up posting a record unbeaten stand in a successful run chase.Bancroft brought up the winning runs by smashing Woakes to the long-off fence twice to underline concerns about England’s change bowlers. For cricket writer Gideon Haigh, Woakes fell far short of filling Stokes’s shoes.”Chris Woakes is a plucky cricketer, mainly in English conditions. Yet having him stand in as a pace bowling all-rounder for Ben Stokes is like casting Hugh Grant as Hannibal Lecter,” Haigh wrote in The Australian newspaper.England’s seamers may enjoy more success with the pink ball in the first day-night Ashes Test starting Saturday but the team’s soft middle order remains under huge pressure heading to Adelaide Oval. For the moment, England remain in a holding pattern until the result of the Stokes investigation is known.”Until that happens, nothing has changed,” director of cricket Andrew Strauss told British media on Sunday. “We’re in the same situation as we have been for quite a long time now.”
Former women’s champion Paige returned to the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) on Monday Night RAW last week in style and she took the momentum forward this week as well.Last week three women led by the the returning Briton attacked Bayley, Mickie James, Alicia Fox and Sasha Banks to interrupt their Fatal-4-Way match for the women’s title and then went on to hammer the current RAW women’s champion Alexa Bliss backstage to make a bold statement. This week, Paige and her crew from NXT consisting of Mandy Rose and Sonya Devill were supposed to face Bayley, James and Banks in a three-women tag-team match. But the trio, now called the ‘Absolution’, had something else in their minds. They continued the chaos by injuring Bayley and Mickie James backstage and then went on to attack Banks in the middle of the ring after surrounding her from three sides of the squared mat. They also returned to do the same after Asuka beat Dana Brooke but surprisingly allowed her to escape.Does that ring a bell?Yes! This is exactly how ‘The Shield’ started.Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins would surround the ring and then prowl onto their prey and deliver a hammering.Paige’s return in this avatar was something that no one was expecting and it will be interesting to see how the trio go about in the business.Another group of NXT women also invaded SmackDown last week. Ruby Riot, Liv Morgan and Sarah Logan laid out Naomi and Becky Lynch in the backstage area and then went onto attack Charlotte Flair and Natalya during their rematch, causing it to end in a no-contest.advertisementThere are rumours suggesting that Paige will lead a ‘cross-band’ women’s revolution and if the signs in the three nights are anything to go by, it will be an exciting time for women’s wrestling in the upcoming months. This is something that the WWE fans will be seeing for the first time in a long time to come and knowing how well they embraced ‘The Shield’, it could be a great way to carry forward the upsurge in women’s wrestling with a strong and capable performer in Paige.
Steve Smith has got an insatiable appetite for runs like Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting, says Steve Waugh
Legendary Australia batsman Steve Waugh on Friday said current skipper Steve Smith’s hunger for runs is similar to Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar and Kangaroo great Ricky Ponting.Waugh felt that Smith, who stroked an unbeaten 141 to steer the Kangaroos to a 10-wicket win in the Ashes opener in Brisbane, will rewrite the record books.”He’s almost going to rewrite the history books the way he is playing, 21 centuries in 57 Tests — and he didn’t do so well in his first 10 or so,” Waugh told reporters here.”He’s got an insatiable appetite for runs, a bit like (Sachin) Tendulkar and Ponting.Waugh, who sits third on Australia’s list of all-time Test run-scorers with 10,927 runs, termed Smith as “incredible”, adding to the chorus of former Australia skippers — including Ponting, Allan Border, Greg and Ian Chappell praising the youngster.”The great players just want to keep scoring runs, they love batting and that’s what he does well.”He concentrates well, overcomes plans well and just when you think you’ve got him in a weak moment he’ll find a way out of it,” the legendary batsman added.Already 1-0 up in the five-match Ashes rubber, Australia are all set to take on England in the historic day-night second Test at the Adelaide Oval from Saturday.
NEW YORK — It took 141 regular-season games and one extra day for Rick Nash to get his first hat trick with the New York Rangers.A little help from the NHL official scorer on Christmas Eve made it so.About 12 hours after the Rangers beat the Washington Capitals on Dec. 23d, Nash was credited with his third goal of the game, it has been announced.Nash gave New York a 1-0 lead in the first period and a 3-0 edge 5:12 into the third. He was originally given an assist on a power-play goal awarded to Martin St. Louis that made it 4-2 with 3:48 remaining, but it was determined that St. Louis didn’t touch the puck.Nash was the last Rangers player to get his stick on it before Capitals goalie Braden Holtby knocked the puck into the net with his glove. In 32 games this season, Nash has 23 goals — two behind than NHL leader Tyler Seguin of Dallas. He notched only 26 in 65 games last season, his second with the Rangers.TweetPinShare0 Shares
WINNIPEG, Manitoba — For her second goal of the night against Australia, U.S. midfielder Megan Rapinoe channeled Lionel Messi.Rapinoe dribbled the ball before her long, low shot breezed past diving Matildas goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri.“I was doing my best Messi impression,” Rapinoe laughed, before adding: “A much slower version.”Rapinoe’s two goals gave the United States a 3-1 victory over Australia on June 8 in the Americans’ opener at a Women’s World Cup that began with both FIFA and the U.S. team facing controversy.Christen Press also scored for the second-ranked U.S., which is seeking its third World Cup title and first since 1999. And embattled goalkeeper Hope Solo saved four shots on goal, including a pair in the first 15 minutes by the hard-charging Matildas.Lisa De Vanna had tied the score midway through the first half for No. 10 Australia, which kept the United States at bay for the opening hour.“A little bit choppy. I think you could tell we were a little bit nervous,” Rapinoe said. “But we settled in a bit and we were able to get some goals. Three points, that’s most important, especially in this group that’s shaping up a little weird.”The field has expanded from 16 teams to 24 this year, and the Americans’ next match in difficult Group D will be June 12 against fifth-ranked Sweden and former U.S. coach Pia Sundhage. They finish group play on June 16 against Nigeria, which played to a physical and somewhat surprising 3-3 tie with Sweden in the opener of the June 8 doubleheader.U.S. star forward Alex Morgan, sidelined by a bone bruise in her left knee, entered in the 79th minute in her first game action since April 11 with her Portland club.“I felt really good. I had no pain whatsoever,” Morgan said. “Obviously, I was running down balls a lot and trying to keep possession, making sure we kept the 3-1 lead. I felt good, and I’m looking forward to getting more time, hopefully next time.”Rapinoe scored in the 12th minute for the Americans, Press put the U.S. ahead for good in the 61st, and Rapinoe added her 31st international goal in the 78th, the first two-goal game at the World Cup for the U.S. since Abby Wambach against Norway in 2007.The Americans, who won the title in 1991 and ’99, improved to 5-0-2 in World Cup openers and 23-0-2 in all matches against Australia. The game was televised in prime time back home, where large numbers of fans tuned in last year for the men’s World Cup in Brazil.“Couldn’t be prouder to have the women of Team #USA representing us in stars, stripes, and shin guards. Good luck,” Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton tweeted. In the absence of the 25-year-old Morgan, 35-year-old Wambach and Canada-born Sydney Leroux started up top against the No. 10 Matildas, whose best World Cup finish was sixth in 2007.While the American women have won three straight Olympic gold medals, the third World Cup title has eluded them. They lost the 2011 final to Japan on penalty kicks. The World Cup is being played as FIFA deals with a scandal which U.S. prosecutors allege involves more than $150 million in bribes. FIFA President Sepp Blatter, who is not at the tournament, announced last week that he plans to resign.Solo started a day after an ESPN report revealed new details about her arrest last June in Washington state on domestic violence charges.“That was a long time ago. I’ll be honest, we’ve moved on,” U.S. coach Jill Ellis said. “She’s been a fantastic player and teammate. None of that has even resonated with us, and I’m sure many of the players aren’t aware of it.”Asked whether it was it difficult to maintain concentration, Solo responded: “I’m perfectly focused.”She was tested in the fifth minute, when she tipped Emily Van Egmond’s shot off the crossbar and over. She made another save on Michelle Heyman in the 13th.“Hope came up absolutely huge for us,” Rapinoe said. “At least three saves that no one else in the world could make.”Rapinoe’s kick from the top of the penalty area deflected off an Australia’s Laura Alleway past goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri. But De Vanna tied it when she slotted the ball inside the near post for her 36th goal in 100th international appearance appearsPress scored off a cross from Leroux. When Press was subbed off seven minutes later, she was given an ovation from the crowd of 31,148, which overwhelmingly sided with the Americans. It was her first career World Cup goal.Ellis said Rapinoe’s player of the match honor was well deserved. “Megan thrives in big games, big moments,” Ellis said. “Yeah, she’s got ice running through her veins.”(ANNE M. CLEVELAND — The New York Yankees needed something positive to happen before they headed to Toronto for an important three-game series. As it turned out, several positive things happened, most notably the end of a five-game losing streak, in an Aug. 13 8-6 win over the Cleveland Indians.New York remained a half-game behind AL East-leading Toronto, which has won 11 in a row. The teams begin their series Aug. 14, a week after the Blue Jays swept three games at Yankee Stadium.“They’ve been playing great baseball,” designated hitter Alex Rodriguez said. “We just won a game. It’s going to make for a great series.”Brian McCann hit a three-run homer and Stephen Drew also connected. Limited to a total of six runs during their skid, the Yankees shook loose as McCann hit one out in the first inning.Drew hit a solo homer in the second, his 15th of the season, added an RBI double in the fourth and wound up scoring a career-high four runs. While it’s still mid-August, the series, which sold out a week ago, will have a postseason feel. “This is what you put in all the hours in for,” McCann said. “This is fun and it’s going to be a competitive race.”Brett Gardner got three hits and drove in three runs for New York.Nathan Eovaldi (12-2) won his seventh straight decision, allowing four runs in 5 1/3 innings. The right-hander hasn’t lost since June 16, a span of 10 starts.Andrew Miller, who blew his first save of the season Aug. 11, allowed a run in the ninth on Carlos Santana’s single but struck out Abraham Almonte to end the game. Miller is 25-for-26 in save situations.Yankees Manager Joe Girardi admitted McCann’s home run couldn’t have come at a better time. “It seemed like that was more runs than we scored in a week,” he said. “It changes the mood, obviously.”Trevor Bauer (9-9) gave up six runs in 3 1/3 innings as Cleveland’s four-game winning streak ended. The Indians rallied from a four-run deficit and cut the lead to 7-5 in the seventh when Dellin Betances threw a wild pitch with the bases loaded.“We just ran out of innings,” Indians Manager Terry Francona said. “You see Betances and Andrew Miller coming and that’s no picnic. But we kept hitting and guys gave themselves a chance. Tough game to win.”Jacoby Ellsbury, snapping an 0-for-19 skid, started the game with a single and Gardner walked. Bauer retired the next two hitters but fell behind McCann in the count 2-1. That prompted a visit by pitching coach Mickey Callaway, and McCann hit a towering drive to right on the next pitch. The home run was McCann’s 20th of the season and second is as many nights. They arrived in the offseason at a combined cost of $140 million, with the intention of bringing a new dimension to Liverpool’s midfield.Fabinho would be the pure, out-and-out holding midfielder the team had been missing for a few years. Naby Keita would be the energetic, goal-scoring, box-to-box runner in the mold of Steven Gerrard. It has taken eight months — and some initial skepticism — but they are finally proving their worth to a team that could yet end the season as the Premier League champions, not to mention Champions League winners. The goals from Liverpool’s three-pronged strikeforce of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino speak for themselves. The defense, marshalled by the dominant Virgil van Dijk, is deservedly getting plaudits for the being the meanest in the league. But Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp at last might have his ideal midfield to complete the team.Much to his initial frustration, Fabinho was eased slowly into English soccer by Klopp following a move from Monaco for 50 million euros ($58 million). The Brazil international has underlined his versatility by filling in at center back — and even right back — but is now a mainstay as the team’s midfield anchorman, his long legs and reading of the game regularly breaking up opposition attacks.Keita has taken even longer to feel at home since joining from Leipzig for a reported 70 million euros (then $85 million). Some turns and flicks aside, the Guinea midfielder has produced largely forgettable performances in his first season for Liverpool as he struggled to get attuned to the pressing game required in Klopp’s team. But he has started Liverpool’s last three games and scored in two of them — his first goals for the club. Even though he didn’t score in the 2-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday that kept Liverpool in first place by two points, Keita regularly popped up in or around the box to give Chelsea’s defenders another player to think about apart from Mane, Salah and Firmino.“It is not easy to move from Germany to change club, especially as the league is not the same,” said Mane, who briefly played with Keita at Red Bull Salzburg in 2014. “It is part of the things you have to deal with and he is working hard every single day.“The real Naby is coming still.”Tellingly, the blossoming of Fabinho and Keita has given Jordan Henderson some license and freedom to get forward, and the captain is in arguably his best form this season. Henderson changed the game when coming on as a substitute in the 3-1 win over Southampton on April 5 and set up Mane’s opening goal against Chelsea with a delicate cross after bursting into the box.Henderson recently revealed he went to Klopp’s office to speak to the manager about playing further forward, having spent most of the season as the holding midfielder in front of the defense. Fabinho’s emergence has enabled Klopp to make that switch and Henderson looks, for the moment anyway, to have ousted Georginio Wijnaldum from the lineup. It is a tough call on Wijnaldum, who has been one of the best players not just for Liverpool but in the Premier League. But these are the ebbs and flows of a long season and the Fabinho-Keita-Henderson triumvirate looks to be Liverpool’s new-look midfield. Expect them to be first choice for the final games of the season as the team chases titles at home and in Europe.By: Steve Douglas, AP Sports WriterTweetPinShare0 Shares
I feel a rant coming on! I have just been to visit my mother in South Africa and I found many examples of designer oversight that proved very frustrating. First up – the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Despite the fact that all the controls are available on the seat-back screen, the controls for the lights, volume for the entertainment, and request for the attendant are duplicated in hardware on top of the armrest. Every time you try and shift your weight you end up inadvertently calling the attendant, changing your headset’s volume or turning on your neighbour’s overhead light (or any combination). That is nothing compared to the toilet. Apparently it was designed to make sure the lid stays down at all times when not in use, with the help of gravity. This means that standing up to pee is very difficult since you have to have one hand dedicated to keeping the seat and cover up at all times. This doesn’t stop men from trying though, with a resultant mess.Oh but it gets much worse! The seat also slopes forward which is uncomfortable enough when you sit, but the lid rests on your back which is quite creepy and is almost as if to say hurry up! Before you even get seated though, you have to perform several antics that would be slapstick comedy if viewed by an audience. The designers provided a dispenser for paper seat covers for hygiene which the airline thoughtfully keeps filled. So you take one out and complete the perforations so that there is a gap where there needs to be. You now need one hand to lift the cover and a second to place a flimsy piece of paper in the right location on a sloping surface. A third hand would solve the problem. And now… you have to turn around – how exactly do you keep the paper in place and the cover up while you do that? Did you remember to unbuckle and drop your pants? No, that has to be done first. Start again. Next question – how do you only partially drop your pants so they don’t end up in the shmutz on the floor? A fourth hand would be well, really handy. (A Goon Show aficionado might suggest a second person!) Now to manage the turn around, keeping the paper in place and with your pants hitched, all you need is an eye in the back of your head.Next time I will travel with adhesive tape- it would match the duct tape used to hold some wall panels down – no wait, that was the 767 I flew on!For these and all the other indignities they have inflicted on us passengers I curse aircraft interior designers, their managers and airline executives to fly cattle-class for all eternity. Give my regards to the Flying Dutchman, and I don’t mean KLM.Let me get off one soapbox and on to a more familiar one. I travel with an Apple iPad Pro and an LG G4 Vigor smartphone (using Android 5.1.1), both devices you would think were designed to operate in multiple locations. My mother has a 1GB download limit on her Internet access and some ridiculously slow data transfer rate – both limitations have been fairly common on all my travels especially a recent cruise. Four days into the trip, my iPad popped up with a notice that there was a 10GB download of the new operating system. Did I want to install? The next day – did I want to install? It took 5 days for it to figure out that maybe it should wait. Why isn’t there an option of “don’t bother me for N days” or only update when connected to a particular MAC address? At least in this case the software did stop nagging after a while.Android updates for the different apps on my phone show up about 90 times a week, but at least it’s easy enough to ignore except for an app called WhatsApp. For those of you who don’t know, it’s an app that allows you to send messages and have conversations over the Internet. Overseas it seems to have supplanted regular SMS messages and Skype. WhatsApp doesn’t follow the Android update regimen even though the updates happen quite frequently. You only find out that there’s an update pending when you open the app. When I open the app I want to make a call, so I don’t want to update at that instant. I decline. But at the end of the call when I want to take the opportunity whilst I remember, there is no option anywhere that I can find to allow you to initiate the update. And so you have to try to remember to try and open the app at some other time in the hope that it will prompt for the update, because there is another kicker. At some point, WhatsApp won’t let you continue until you actually do update – and hopefully you have bandwidth at that time to do it. Grrrr.Bundled with the Android on my smartphone is a widget called Agenda. I recently decided to join the 20th Century by porting my paper diary to the electronic medium. Imagine my surprise when I looked at an appointment scheduled for after my return and it was supposed to be happening at midnight. The app had shifted all my appointment times to South African time. I had set up an appointment whilst in SA for my return and that was set to SA times, so wrong on my return. There is a setting to lock the time to the default zone, but that means that setting an appointment for when I am in SA won’t work. Sigh! Oh and another thing, the app will send me an email ½ hour before an appointment That’s great, but the time it details in the email is in England’s time zone. I could understand using UTC, but English time? I can find no obvious method to change it to local time or any other time zone.Let me stop here before I pass judgement on the Apple Pencil (which I will do as part of another blog) or iTunes. And don’t get me started on the features of Microsoft Word that don’t work properly (maybe another blog as well). This isn’t the first time I have expressed dissatisfaction with the design of others. Here are some more of my opinions where I don’t think the designers tried out their own products: Monkeys Got to My Cardio Machine, Monkeys Messed Up My HP Scanjet, Big Time, and Cable Box Causes Bigger Headache Than Daytime TV.Do you have examples of where designers obviously haven’t tried out their own products? Renesas Electronics announced the launch of its Failure Detection e-AI Solution for motor-equipped home appliances, featuring the Renesas RX66T 32-bit microcontroller. This solution with embedded AI (e-AI) enables failure detection of home appliances — such as refrigerators, air conditioners, and washing machines — due to motor abnormality. Property data showing the motor’s current or rotation rate status can be used directly for abnormality detection, making it possible to implement both motor control and e-AI–based abnormality detection with a single MCU. Using the RX66T eliminates the need for additional sensors, thereby reducing a customer’s bill of materials cost. When a home appliance malfunctions, the motor operation typically appears abnormal when running and being monitored for fault detection in real-time. By implementing e-AI-based motor control-based detection, the failure detection results can be applied not only to trigger alarms when a fault occurs, but also for preventive maintenance. For example, e-AI can estimate when repairs and maintenance should be performed, and it can identify the fault locations. This capability provides home appliance manufacturers the means to boost maintenance operations efficiency and improve product safety by adding functionality that predicts faults before they occur in their products. The Renesas Failure Detection e-AI Solution for motor-equipped home appliances can control up to four motors because it utilizes the high-performance RX66T MCU. Today’s washing machines typically incorporate three motors: One to rotate the washing tub, one to drive the water circulation pump, and one to drive the drying fan. The Renesas Failure Detection e-AI Solution can therefore be used to control these three motors with a single RX66T chip while at the same time monitoring all three motors for faults. The new solution utilizes the Renesas Motor Control Evaluation System and an RX66T CPU card. This hardware is combined with a set of sample program files that run on the RX66T MCU as well as a GUI tool that enables collecting and analyzing property data indicating motor states. In order to detect faults, it is necessary to learn the characteristics of the normal state. Using the GUI tool, system engineers can immediately begin developing AI learning and optimized fault detection functionality. Once the AI models are developed, the e-AI development environment (composed of an e-AI Translator, e-AI Checker, and e-AI Importer) can be easily used to import the learned AI models into the RX66T.Share this:TwitterFacebookLinkedInMoreRedditTumblrPinterestWhatsAppSkypePocketTelegram Tags: Chips & Components Continue Reading Previous MVTec presents embedded vision and deep learning at embedded worldNext AAEON: mini-ITX motherboard powers vision for Industry 4.0

\R Paris, Jul 16 (AP) It was a victory for all of France and the home crowd did it justice, pouring into Paris’ Champs-Elysees Avenue by the tens of thousands to celebrate in an explosion of joy.France’s 4-2 win over Croatia in the World Cup final in Moscow on Sunday marked the second time in 20 years that France has won the World Cup, and came at a time when the people feel needy.”It represents enormous things,” said Goffrey Hamsik, dressed in a hat resembling a rooster – the French national symbol – and a shirt with the No. 10 for Kylian Mpappe, the 19-year-old breakout star who hails from the Paris suburb of Bondy.”We’ve had lots of problems in France these past years,” he said, recalling deadly terror attacks. “This is good for the morale … Here, we are all united. We mix. There is no religion, there is nothing, and that’s what feels good.” People wrapped in flags and dressed in crazy hats, and one man spotted totally nude except for the tricolor, marched down the avenue where France displayed its military might a day earlier for Bastille Day.Revelers set off smoke bombs in the national colors – blue, white and red – obscuring Napoleon’s triumphal arch. People climbed atop every newspaper kiosk and bus stop in the area to wave flags and lead the crowds below in cheers. The national anthem, the Marseillaise, rang out, cars honked horns and cherry bombs cracks.A young man sprayed a fire extinguisher on the crowd on a late hot afternoon.Hundreds of police in riot gear were discretely lined up on side streets to monitor revelers.advertisementTypically, celebrations in France end up with some broken shop windows and other destruction, and Sunday was no exception. Tear gas was lobbed at one point on the Champs-Elysees. About 4,000 police watched over the fan zone – packed to its 90,000 capacity – during the match, then moved to the Champs-Elysees and neighboring streets. As night fell, The Eiffel Tower flashed 1998-2018 to mark France’s two World Cup titles. The Arc de Triomph was awash in the national colors, lit with the rooster, the faces of the winning team and the words “Proud to be Blue,” or French. The celebrations were spread across the nation. For all the crazy antics – and some revelers who got out of control – a sense of patriotism and unity was almost visceral.Antoine Griezmann, the France striker who scored one of the goal’s Sunday, told a news conference two days before the final, televised on BFM TV, that pride in country is in short supply.”We say it so little … We should be proud to be French,” Griezmann said.Mahmoud Bourassi was among those taking a longer-term view and he had some sobering thoughts about France’s run to the title and the festivities it has sparked.Bourassi runs a youth center in Bondy – Mbappe’s home that was among those scarred by riots in 2005 that exposed the fissures of France that have yet to heal – and he knows the teenage star of the tournament.”All this euphoria and effervescence, it’s positive but it’s emotional and ephemeral,” he said ahead of France’s win. Bourassi said sports is a “catalyst to bring people and nations together.” But, he added, it must be built on.”What we’re seeing is magic, exceptional. But what are we going to do with it tomorrow?” That is a question for President Emmanuel Macron, who was in Moscow celebrating with the team on victory night, and will receive the squad more formally on Monday at the presidential Elysee Palace.Revelers celebrated the moment.”We’re happy. It took 20 years … It’s the pride of the nation. It unites everyone. It federates,” Frederique Pourquet said as she and her friend left the Champs-Elysees.The win “shows that the French people are consolidated and the work of all France,” said Omar Bzi.Hajar Maghnaoui, of Asnieres, north of Paris, said “It’s a way to bring the French people together, and also the world.” (AP) APAAPA
Colombo, Jul 29 (PTI) Former Sri Lanka Cricket President Thilanga Sumathipala today made the allegation that 1996 World Cup winners Arjuna Ranatunga and Aravinda de Silva were the first players from the country to be named for alleged match fixing. “Arjuna and Aravinda were the names mentioned, they were alleged to have taken 15,000 dollars from someone named Gupta,” Sumathipala told reporters at the north central town of Anuradhapura. He said his (SLC) administration at that time was blamed for not investigating the complaint of alleged match fixing by Ranatunga and de Silva. Sumathipala was firing a salvo at Ranatunga in the duo’s long running public slanging match. Ranatunga, a current government minister, had earlier accused Sumathipala’s family of having links with bookies. He said that SLC has gone down to a precipice because of corrupt management of the game under Sumathipala. Ranatunga’s brother Nishantha had filed court case to stay the May 30 elections of SLC when Sumathipala seemed ready to be re-elected. Nishantha was one of two rivals of Sumathipala for the position of SLC boss. The Minister of Sports has appointed a Competent Authority to run the SLC while elections are being delayed.
